How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photoshoot

Your maternity photoshoot is such a special opportunity to capture the beauty of this sweet season in your life. It’s a time to celebrate the incredible journey of pregnancy and create memories you’ll cherish forever. But let’s be real—pregnancy comes with its own challenges, and the thought of being in front of the camera can feel overwhelming. The good news? With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can feel confident, relaxed, and radiant during your session. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your maternity photoshoot:

When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Session?

The sweet spot for maternity photos is typically between 28 and 34 weeks. At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully rounded, but you’re not yet in those final weeks when you might feel more tired or uncomfortable. Of course, every pregnancy is different, so consider your personal comfort and how you’re feeling.

You want to be sure that you don’t wait until the last minute to book as photographers’ calendars fill up quickly, especially during busy seasons. I recommend scheduling your session at least 2-3 months in advance to secure your preferred date and time.

Choose Outfits That Make You Feel Amazing

Your outfit can make a huge difference in how you feel during your photoshoot. Flowing dresses that accentuate your bump are always a stunning choice. Soft, stretchy fabrics that drape beautifully and allow movement work especially well. Neutral tones, pastels, and earthy colors photograph wonderfully while keeping the focus on you and your bump.

If you’re not sure what to wear, don’t stress! Many photographers (myself included!) offer wardrobe guidance or even client closets with curated options. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you choose.

I also like to suggest for my clients to bring a backup outfit, just in case you change your mind or want an alternative for different looks.

Pamper Yourself Beforehand

Think of your photoshoot as an opportunity to treat yourself. Schedule some self-care in the days leading up to your session—whether that’s a prenatal massage, a mani-pedi, or just taking a relaxing bath at home. On the day of your shoot, allow extra time to get ready so you don’t feel rushed. Consider having your hair and makeup professionally done for an extra confidence boost. Many photographers will actually offer hair and makeup as an add on to your session, so you can look and feel your best!

If you’re doing your own makeup, opt for a natural look that enhances your features. That being said, don’t be afraid to apply a little extra foundation and blush so that it will show up on camera.

Another thing to keep in mind is making sure that your makeup stays on, especially if your session is on a warmer day. A good setting spray is your best friend to keep everything looking fresh.

Pick a Meaningful Location

The location of your photoshoot can add a personal and emotional touch to your images. Whether it’s a serene park, a golden field at sunset, or the coziness of your own home, choose a setting that feels special to you. If you’re unsure, your photographer can suggest options based on your style and preferences.

When I was pregnant with my firstborn, we were living in New Orleans and I wanted to have our photos done at City Park. It’s a very large park in the heart of the city, but it held a lot of special meaning to me and my husband. We met in New Orleans, and would often go to City Park and walk and talk. It’s where he first told me he loved me and where he proposed. So, I definitely wanted to document my pregnancy with our first child there.

Think about the vibe you want—do you envision an airy, light-filled outdoor session or something more intimate and moody indoors? Communicate your vision with your photographer so they can bring it to life, but also keep in mind the way that your photographer edits.

Don’t Overthink Posing

Worried about how to pose? Don’t be! A skilled photographer will guide you every step of the way. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s capturing genuine emotion and connection. Trust your photographer to help you find flattering angles and natural poses that highlight your glow.

Focus on interacting with your baby bump. Rest your hands gently on your belly, look down with a soft smile, or think about how excited you are to meet your little one. Genuine emotions always shine through.

For my clients, I will always guide them through posing and what looks great on camera and is flattering.

Bring Your Partner or Siblings Along

Including your partner and/or older children in the session adds depth and meaning to your photos. These moments aren’t just about your pregnancy—they’re about the family you’re creating. Candid shots of everyone laughing, cuddling, or holding hands can be some of the most precious images.

If little ones are involved, bring snacks, toys, or something to keep them entertained between shots (I have a blog post here about preparing little ones for a photoshoot that might be helpful). Letting them be themselves often results in the sweetest, most authentic moments.

Relax and Trust the Process

It’s natural to feel a little nervous before your session, but remember: this is a celebration of you and the life you’re bringing into the world. Try to let go of any pressure to look or act a certain way. Your photographer is there to make you feel comfortable and capture the beauty of this moment, exactly as you are.

Take a few deep breaths and think about the joy and anticipation you’re feeling. Those emotions will shine through in your photos and make them even more special.

Your maternity photoshoot is more than just a photoshoot—it’s an opportunity to honor this incredible chapter of your life. By preparing ahead of time and embracing the experience, you’ll walk away with images that capture your strength, beauty, and love for your growing family.

Ready to book your session? I’d love to help you document this milestone and create memories you’ll treasure forever. Let’s make your vision come to life!
