When Should You Book Your Newborn Session? (Here’s What I Recommend as a Newborn Photographer)

There’s something about those first few weeks at home with your baby that feels both like a blur and a lifetime. One minute you’re figuring out how to swaddle or soothe, the next you’re soaking in sleepy snuggles with tiny fingers wrapped around yours. As a photographer specializing in newborn and family sessions, one question I get all the time is this:

“When is the best time to schedule a newborn photo session?”

Maybe you’ve already welcomed your little one and the days feel like they’re flying by. Or maybe you’re still preparing for baby’s arrival and trying to get ahead of the to-do list. Wherever you are in your journey, I’ve got some heartfelt advice that I hope takes one more thing off your plate – and helps you breathe a little easier.

Why Timing Matters (But Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect)

If I’ve learned anything from photographing newborns and walking alongside dozens of new mamas, it’s that there are no perfect timelines in this season of life. Things rarely go according to plan, and that’s completely okay. Still, it can be helpful to know what to expect and when to reach out.

Here’s what I tell my clients: the sweet spot for newborn sessions is typically between 2 to 4 weeks old. I recommend that window because:

  • Baby is still tucked into that sleepy, snuggly newborn phase
  • Most families are starting to settle into a bit of rhythm at home
  • This age still allows us to capture those tiny newborn details without rushing

But here’s the real truth: if life is messy, unpredictable, or exhausting (which it often is), and you don’t reach out until week 5 or 6? That’s okay too. There’s grace for that. Because the purpose of your newborn session isn’t to check a box on a timeline – it’s to honor and preserve this fleeting, beautiful season of your family’s story.

3 Things to Know About Booking Your Newborn Session

1. The Best Time to Reach Out Is During Pregnancy

If you’re expecting and already thinking about photos, that’s a great time to get the conversation started. I usually recommend booking your session during your second or third trimester. While we won’t schedule the exact date until baby arrives, holding your spot ensures I’ll be able to plan ahead for your family and offer that calm, boutique-style experience I’m known for.

And feel free to ask questions early on! Whether it’s about choosing your wardrobe, including siblings, or how an in-home session works, I’m here to walk with you each step of the way.

2. Two to Four Weeks Old Is Ideal for Your Session

While you may hear other photographers suggest doing newborn sessions during the first 7 to 10 days, I’ve found that days 14 to 30ish create a sweet balance between sleepy baby time and giving you, Mama, a little more space to breathe. This window often means you’re more rested, nursing (if you’re breastfeeding) has had a chance to begin regulating, and older siblings have adjusted a bit to the new dynamic.

Plus, I specialize in more natural, in-home lifestyle photography, so our goal isn’t to get “perfectly posed” images. It’s to capture connection – that quiet joy in the nursery, those stolen kisses on the bed, the real and beautiful beginning of your baby’s story.

3. If You Miss the Newborn Window, All Is Not Lost

Let me say this as clearly and kindly as I can: if your baby is already five or six weeks old and you haven’t booked a session yet, you haven’t missed your chance. There is still so much beauty to document.

I’ve photographed babies who were eight weeks old who still curled into Daddy’s shoulder, reached for Mama’s hair, and smiled in ways that melted my heart. Don’t let the “ideal window” keep you from capturing what matters.

Your Family’s Story Is Worth Documenting – Whenever You’re Ready

At the heart of what I do is this belief: our stories deserve to be remembered, not because they’re flawless, but because they’re real. And newborn sessions do exactly that. They aren’t just about your baby’s squishy toes or sleepy yawns (although I love those too), but about the sacred shift that happens when a new little soul comes into your life and changes everything.

Whether you’re in Northport, Tuscaloosa, or nearby, I’m here to gently guide you through a session that lets you savor, celebrate, and be seen. No pressure, no performing – just honest, heartfelt photography that honors your family’s beginning.
